Winter blanket over Crawford Lake

Crawford Lake isn't just any lake. It is one of the few special lakes where a phenomenon known as meromixis occurs. A meromictic lake is very deep for its surface area. Layers of sediment at the bottom of the lake reamin undisturbed by wind or temperature changes. Since there is little oxygen and virtually no turnover of water that ar down below the surface there is minimal bacterial breakdown. Thus the layers of sediment in the lake represent and accurate record of the geological and human history that has surrounded the lake since its birth 12,000 years ago. History is literally frozen in time here. I thought this image of the lake in midwinter successfully captures that idea.

While studying the layers of sediment in the lake scientists found traces of human impact between the years 1300 to 1510. In 1973, half a kilometer from the lake, archaeologists discovered the oldest pre-European Indian village in Canada. This 15th century village has been reconstructed on its original foundation within the park.
