I noticed these birch trunks glowing in the backlight of the setting sun. I was carrying a medium format SLR which enabled me to work quickly. There was a petulant wind as the sun dipped in and out of distant trees, changing the light quality from one frame to the next. I used a long lens the compress the trunks against some swaying foreground vegetation. I ended up exposing about 20 frames in the rapidly changing conditions but only liked the second image. Technically, this is a shot that would be quite difficult to capture on large format film, especially if I'm trying to respond in the moment. Shooting on a more mobile format opens up different possibilities that I normally wouldn't entertain with the big cameras. And that is part of the fun. Using what you have to its maximum potential.
